Quiet cooling is all you need - experience be quiet! De Shang De Jing Jie SILENT

In the field of mechanics, there is an important discipline: aerodynamics. Aerodynamics has a wide range of applications in aviation, automotive, architecture, and other fields. For instance, in the aviation sector, aerodynamics is used to design the wing profiles and fuselage shapes of aircraft to achieve better lift, drag, and stability; in the automotive industry, aerodynamics is employed to optimize the design of car bodies to reduce air resistance and enhance the economy of fuel or electricity consumption.

Additionally, aerodynamics is also applied in the field of heat dissipation. For example, the design of cooling fans, such as the style of the fan blades, the gap size between the frame and the blades, the type of bearings, and even the choice of materials, can all affect the performance of heat dissipation. As an essential component in DIY computer assembly for enthusiasts, cooling fans may look similar in appearance, but their specifications can vary significantly, and so can their prices. Many users may wonder: where does the price difference mainly lie between more expensive fans and cheaper ones? We will seek answers from be quiet!'s SILENT WINGS 4 and SILENT WINGS PRO 4.

The versions we are going to experience are the SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM and the high-speed version SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM.

SILENT WINGS 4 includes an accessory box inside the packaging box. In this box, be quiet! has prepared a complete set of installation accessories for users, including standard silicone anti-vibration mounts, metal fixing screws, and soft rubber screws. It is worth noting that SILENT WINGS 4 comes with a set of silicone anti-vibration mounts pre-installed on the fan. These mounts are made of high-quality silicone material, offering good elasticity and vibration reduction effects. When users install the fan on the case, these pre-installed silicone anti-vibration mounts can be used in conjunction with soft rubber screws to effectively reduce the vibration generated during fan operation, thereby reducing noise and creating a quieter usage environment for users.

Of course, for users with special installation needs, the standard anti-vibration mounts in the accessory box will also be useful. These mounts have slightly different functions from the silicone anti-vibration mounts, but their basic purpose is to reduce vibration and enhance compatibility in different usage scenarios. Standard anti-vibration mounts can be used with metal screws and installed on various cooling devices, whether tower coolers or radiators, ensuring perfect compatibility and stable operation.

Higher quality materials than ordinary fans

The workmanship and materials of SILENT WINGS 4 are very solid. It feels noticeably heavier than ordinary fans when held, and the fan has a good texture with no rough edges, indicating very delicate workmanship. From actual weighing, the weight of the 120mm PWM version of SILENT WINGS 4 is approximately 195g, while the weight of a standard fan of the same specification is only about 125g. The weight reflects that SILENT WINGS 4 uses better materials. The motors used across the entire Silent Wings 4 series have seen a significant upgrade compared to the previous generation. The new generation of fans features a superior three-phase, six-pole motor, which boasts a higher power density, meaning it can deliver greater output power at the same size. Additionally, the three-phase, six-pole motor offers smooth torque, low noise, and stable operation. It also has higher efficiency and better control performance, with reduced vibration during operation. Especially with the addition of a frequency converter, the motor can operate with very low power consumption. In contrast to the common motors used in many inexpensive cooling fans on the market, the three-phase, six-pole motor is more costly, which is one of the significant reasons why high-performance fans are priced higher. The Silent Wings 4 with a 120mm specification has a voltage/current of 12V/0.13A, with a single fan's power consumption at approximately 1.5W, while the 140mm version is slightly higher, with a power consumption of around 3.6W. This upgrade has led to a notable enhancement in both performance and efficiency, while also reducing power consumption.

Silent Wings 4 utilizes FDB (FluidDynamic Bearing) bearings, which have specially designed grooves within the bearing that allow the fan to operate quietly and have a service life of up to 300,000 hours at room temperature of 25°C. If calculated based on 10 hours of operation per day, it can last for over 80 years.

Furthermore, the fan blades of Silent Wings 4 continue to feature the signature 9-blade scythe design, which reduces noise generated during operation, making the entire system quieter. The blades also incorporate the iconic water wave pattern of the series, enhancing aesthetics and improving the aerodynamic effect of the fan.

In addition to the blades, the spacing between the fan blades and the frame in Silent Wings 4 has been optimized to about 1mm, which is an ideal range that allows the fan to intake and exhaust air more efficiently during operation, enhancing cooling performance. This compact design also helps to reduce fan vibration and noise. Some readers may not be familiar with the term "blade-to-frame spacing"; it refers to the gap between the end of the fan blades and the inner frame of the fan. Although this spacing may seem trivial, it actually has a significant impact on the overall performance of the fan. The size of the blade-to-frame spacing is directly related to the fan's generated air pressure and noise level. A larger spacing will result in a corresponding decrease in air pressure during operation. This is because a larger gap reduces the resistance of air flow, leading to increased airflow but reduced air pressure. Many inexpensive fans on the market have a blade-to-frame spacing of more than 2mm. An excessively large spacing can also lead to a decrease in fan efficiency, as more air may escape through the gap between the blades and the frame instead of being effectively directed to the heat dissipation surface. Conversely, if the blade-to-frame spacing is too close, the blades may rub against the frame under the influence of centrifugal force during high-speed operation. This not only generates additional noise but can also lead to blade damage or a decrease in fan performance. Moreover, an overly close spacing may also limit the cooling effect of the fan, as air flow is restricted.

When designing cooling fans, other factors must also be considered, such as the effects of thermal expansion and contraction, as well as the fan's installation method. For example, fans installed in a suspended manner need to withstand additional pressure from their own weight and vibration, which may affect the setting of the blade-to-frame spacing. Similarly, the gravitational factors in a vertical installation can also impact the stability and performance of the fan.

Additionally, Silent Wings 4 features a funnel-shaped air intake. This design can better guide air flow, increase air pressure, and enable the fan to generate a stronger wind force. This results in better performance in both cooling and ventilation.

In terms of specifications, Silent Wings 4 completely outperforms ordinary fans. Taking the most commonly used 120mm Silent Wings 4 as an example, it has a maximum speed of 1600RPM, delivering a maximum airflow of 48.7CFM (82.74m2/h), an air pressure of 1.79mmH2O, and a low noise level of 18.9dB(A).

Silent Wings 4 uses a standard 4-pin connector with a cable length of 500mm. The cable is protected by a nylon braided mesh, which allows for flexible bending and high-temperature resistance.

A dual-tower heatsink with a single fan can effectively cool a Core i5-14600K processor. We proceeded to test the SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM version next. On a platform with a dual-tower heatsink, ROG Z790 DARK HERO motherboard, and GALAX HOF EXTREME D5-7200 memory, we first disabled the CPU temperature limit in the motherboard BIOS. Then, using the AIDA64 System Stability Test to stress the FPU, we monitored the fan speed with the ASUS ROG Armory Crate software that comes with the motherboard. The test was conducted in an evaluation room with a room temperature of 27°C, running continuously for over 30 minutes. Additionally, to maintain the fans at their maximum speed, we utilized the FanControl software to push the fan speed to the limit.

According to the test results, when processing the Core i5-14600K at its maximum frequency of 5.3GHz (performance cores), the highest package temperature of the processor reached 96°C (performance cores). At the same time, during the full load test with the fans at their highest speed, we measured the noise level to be around 48.2dB(A) at a distance of approximately 30cm from the heatsink, using a decibel meter in an environment with a background noise of about 47dB(A). The noise was only slightly higher than the ambient noise, demonstrating a very quiet performance. Since the test was conducted on an open platform, if installed inside a case with increased distance, the noise would be almost inaudible. In comparison with another low-end fan, at the same temperature, the power consumption was 3W lower, yet the noise was significantly higher, reaching 54dB(A).

Additionally, I tested the SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM high-speed version. This version increased the fan speed to 2500RPM, a 900RPM increase from the standard version, with corresponding improvements in airflow, static pressure, and noise: 76.7CFM (130.31m2/h) airflow, 3.96mmH2O static pressure, and 31.2dB(A) noise.

After using the FanControl software to run the SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM high-speed version fans at full speed, I conducted a load test on the processor with the AIDA64 System Stability Test, focusing on the FPU. After 30 minutes, the processor temperature was 94°C, which is 2°C lower than the standard PWM version. Of course, the trade-off is that the noise of the high-speed version is greater, reaching 53.9dB(A) at full speed. Moreover, the highest speed of the high-speed version is consistent with the rated speed, capable of reaching around 2500RPM.

Experience Summary:

Silent and Thermal Performance Complement Each Other

Through the experience, it can be seen that the SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM version and the high-speed version perform better than standard cooling fans in terms of workmanship, materials, performance, and noise levels. Especially noteworthy is that the noise at the same speed is much lower than that of standard fans. The noise of the PWM version at full speed is almost negligible, which is closely related to its low-frame blade spacing design, three-phase six-pole motor, the incorporation of self-designed FDB bearings, and the funnel-shaped air intake. Thanks to its excellent thermal performance and lower noise levels, a single fan with a dual-tower heatsink can fully suppress the Core i5-14600K processor with performance cores at 5.3GHz. If it's for suppressing Ryzen series processors with lower power consumption, it's even easier. Overall, the SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM version and the high-speed version are highly suitable for users who need to balance silence and thermal performance, and are recommended for use in case or radiator cooling solutions.

Core i5-14600K@5.3GHz suppressed at 92℃

Next, we move on to the testing phase of the SILENT WINGS PRO 4 120mm PWM. We have chosen a platform with a dual-tower cooler, ROG Z790 DARK HERO motherboard, and Galaxy HOF EXTREME D5-7200 memory. We then use the AIDA64 System Stability Test to single-burn the FPU and monitor the fan speed using the ASUS Center software that comes with the ROG motherboard. The entire testing process is conducted in an evaluation room with a room temperature of 27℃ and runs for over 30 minutes.

To ensure the fan operates at its maximum speed, we first set the fan's speed switch to the highest speed, which ensures that the fan's performance during our testing reaches its maximum potential. By maxing out the fan speed, we can test the heat dissipation capability and noise performance of the SILENT WINGS PRO 4 120mm PWM under high load conditions.

According to the test results, when processing the Core i5-14600K at the highest 5.3GHz (performance core), the processor's package temperature peaks at around 92℃ (performance core). At the same time, during the full load test, the fan at the highest speed of 3000RPM, one can clearly feel the "roar" emitted by the fan. We measured the noise level to be around 57.2dB(A) at a distance of about 30cm from the radiator in an ambient noise level of approximately 47dB(A), which is relatively noticeable. When the speed switch is set to "high," the fan speed drops to around 2500RPM, which is the level of the SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM high-speed version, and the measured noise level is 53.3dB(A), close to the noise level of the high-speed version. Finally, when the speed switch is moved to "medium," the fan speed is further reduced, with the speed at around 1601RPM, which is the level of the SILENT WINGS 4 120mm PWM. The noise level is also close to it, at only 48.3dB(A).
